VIAJE A PERSIA –

info

TRAVEL TO PERSIA is a photographic project carried out in Iran and inspired by the extraordinary route followed by García de Silva y Figueroa, born in Extremadura, to the Court of the Shah of Persia in the 17th Century. The goal of this diplomatic delegation from the times of King Philip III was to establish an Alliance with Persians against the growing Ottoman power in the Mediterranean.

After this two-year tour, García de Silva y Figueroa wrote a detailed book with the best description of Persia at that time. He was the first Westerner to identify the ruins of Persepolis and to identify the cuneiform signs as a writing system. His passionate remarks and thorough explanations make this book one of the most interesting texts about Middle East written by a foreigner in the Modern Age.

Following the notes and comments of this book, the author has made this same tour nowadays. These images are the result of a long research process carried out by Manolo Espaliú over last three years and his main goal has been to claim the name of such a relevant figure through a photographic dialogue with Silva’s text.
